Located in a west suburb of Boston, Massachusetts at the intersection of the Waltham, Lexington and Belmont town lines. Metropolitan State Hospital opened it's doors on October 29, 1930. Like many mental health facilities, the campus layout occupies on relatively high ground. The 490 acre (including Geabler) campus is fronted by broad lawns that slope southward to the main entrance on Trapelo Road. Centered around other institutional facilities such as Mclean Hospital, Middlesex Hospital, Gaebler Children's Center and the Fernald State School.

In January of 1992 Metropolitan State Hospital closed as part of the state’s privatization policy and budget cuts regarding the mental health system. The property was sold last year and the campus is currently being demolished. Some buildings are being restored and renovated into housing while others are already destroyed. Unlike some of the other institutions, Metropolitan State Hospital tends to get overlooked. This project is to bring awareness to this asylum.
